I suppose I've got five or six close friends, and most of them are really similar to me. But my friend, Jackie, is the exception. In many ways, we're opposites. We met about ten years ago in Guatemala. I was taking an intensive Spanish language course, and she was in my class. We were also living in the same student accommodations. I arrived a few weeks after her, and she was really friendly. I guess we became friends because we were in the same situation and we were both from the USA. I'm amazed we got along so well, because we have nothing in common. For a start, we come from very different backgrounds. She grew up on a farm in the country with lots of brothers and sisters and dogs and horses. I grew up with my mother in a small apartment in the city with a pet hamster. We don't share the same taste in music, clothes, books, art, or anything really. Our personalities are very different - she's very artistic, and I'm not. I'm very neat and organized, and she's not. We even look different - she's tall and dark, and I'm small and fair. But we do have one very important thing in common. We're both crazy about baseball, and we like the same team - the Red Sox. We meet about three or four times a year and we usually go out for lunch and talk about baseball or the good times in Guatemala.

I know somebody who has an iguana as a pet. It’s a man I work with named Angus. The iguana’s name is Iggy and it’s probably about five years old – that’s how long I’ve known Angus and he got it soon after we met. It was a birthday gift from his wife. It’s almost a meter long from the tip of its nose to the end of its tail and it’s a beautiful green color. Like all reptiles, iguanas never stop growing, so Iggy will get bigger and bigger. It’s kind of shy and nervous, which is exactly the opposite of Angus, who’s very outgoing and confident. It’s definitely better looking than Angus, though. Iggy doesn’t sleep in a cage. Right now, it lives at the top of the drapes in Angus living room. When it was young, it ate crickets, but now that it’s adult, it doesn’t need so much protein – in fact, it’s completely vegetarian. Angus takes it for walks in the park on a leash. It’s funny – when it’s scared, it runs up Angus’ body and sits on his head.

Greta Garbo was a Hollywood star in the 1920s and 1930s. She was born in Sweden in 1906. Her real name was Greta Gustafsson. Her father died when she was fourteen, so she left school and got a job. She worked as a model for newspaper advertisements. When she was seventeen, she went to theater school. She met Mauritz Stiller, a top Swedish movie director, and he gave her a part in one of his movies. He also gave her the name Garbo. In 1925, when Stiller moved to Hollywood, Garbo went with him. She later became an American citizen. In Hollywood, Garbo made twenty-seven movies and got four Academy Award nominations. In 1932, in the movie Grand Hotel, she said the famous line, "I want to be alone." Garbo was not a typical Hollywood star: She was very private. She never spoke about her love affairs, and she didn't give interviews to the press. Many people fell in love with Garbo, and she had several serious relationships. But she never got married, and she didn't have any children. When she was thirty-six, Garbo retired. She moved to New York, changed her name to Harriet Brown, and lived the rest of her life there - alone. She died in 1990 at the age of eighty-four.
